New Year, New Additions to My Portfolio

With the exception of a few weeks in August and a few weeks in January, it has been busy the last ten months with working for a company and taking on a few projects on the side. In my portfolio, I’ve added a few more portraits that include fashion, dance, and men’s portraits. I have also added product photography. Here are samples of what I’ve done:

With all that work in the past several months, it was nice to catch a bit of a break. I headed to the east coast for a week on a bus tour with my family. Apparently, a handful of my friends and acquaintances (approximately five or six) did the same thing within weeks of each other. I was surprised to see them post similar images on social media. Much later, a friend approached me on New Year’s Eve and commented on all the photos I posted and said she even ate at the same restaurants. We must have been on the same trip but different buses. Here are a few of my favourite memories:

High Fashion Editorial Photo Shoot at the Art Gallery of Ontario

At the Art Gallery of Ontario

In the past two months, I was very busy with work which I took in stride. It was not without its challenges. Whether it’s trying to beat traffic during the Pan Am Games, working under various weather conditions or having a technological breakdown. Not to mention having to deal with deadlines. I survived and still remain a photographer.

In the meantime, I did manage to catch a portfolio builder workshop. As I mentioned in a previous blog post, when I complete a photo shoot for clients, these jobs are confidential unless they give me permission to post photos online for my portfolio and social media. I do workshops to help keep me up to date with the latest trends in photography as well as to update my portfolio.

The latest workshop was for High Fashion Editorial and Dance at the AGO. While I do portrait photography for dance schools, I am unable to use these photos for my professional use without the permission of both the company and those in the images. So I am very happy to have taken this workshop so that I am able to include dance in my portfolio.

I had taken the workshop on two different occasions allowing me to review images and improve the second time around. While the models and clothes changed, I had a better idea of where to place models and came better prepared with poses. I felt the images came out stronger the second time around.

The location was at the AGO – Art Gallery of Ontario in the Gallery Italia. In the second photo shoot, it also included the staircase in Walker Court section. In both cases, it was designed by architect Frank Gehry. I felt more confident photographing in the Gallery Italia the second time around knowing how the space looked like and and knowing where to place the models. There was still some challenges such as where the light was hitting the model. A more smoother and evenly lit model looked better than one with spotty lighting, especially around the face. Other than that, I was happy with the results.

For the photo shoot, the makeup artist was Anne Oster, jewelry provided by Diverse Creation Head Designer Reanna Nicefero and clothing provided by Plastik Wrap Designer Adriana Fulop. Each of the models have been given names to represent someone that can be in a woman’s life.

Without much further ado, here are some of what I captured:

Book Cover

photo

About a year ago, I met a wonderful lady named Daniela Szasz who told me she wanted to write a book. She wanted to use my services for a portrait session so she can have a photo on the cover. A year later, she contacted me letting me know that she had finally been published and had shown me what the book looks like (shown above). I like how it turned out and that I’m happy to be a part of her project. You may contact her to order a book if you’re interested.

Beauty Photo Shoot

Editorial Photo Shoot, Artistic

Ever since completing an internship for photography a few years ago, I was quite happy with the experience and the portfolio pieces I received for the work I put into the program. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I realized things were becoming real and I can move forward as a photographer should I choose to. I did leave with a job in tow. A few years later, I managed to retain this job in a tough and often competitive industry. I did manage to get a few freelance jobs on the side in the past few months. I do want to retain the respect of my clients by maintaining their privacy unless they give me permission to use their images for my portfolio.

The question remains – how do I show growth and update my portfolio?

Years ago, I was introduced to Meetup. I started out joining a few social groups. Since then, I have also joined networking and photography groups. It’s been a good experience so far. I started out taking workshops on basic photography. Afterwards, I started to pick and choose workshops suitable to my needs.

The last workshop I took was for beauty editorial with tips on how to submit photos to magazines. It was definitely informative and I learned a few more Photoshop techniques. The facilitator specializes in fine arts. I admire both her’s and another professional photographer’s work who also specializes in fine art. Recently, I was looking into the works of a professional photographer specializing in cosplay. With his comic book like style of editing, I want to learn how he does it. He does have a couple of books on how to achieve this.

With this in mind, I would like to start pushing my own boundaries and experiment in how to create more artistic images. Here are more images from the beauty editorial workshop:

Up and coming, I have a product photography workshop and ballerina at a museum. I look forward to having new works in my portfolio.

Happy New Year

With lots to think about and do, my days are being filled with new projects. I have a mentor to help me focus on the important things. I have projects lined up this week including videography for a small business, a portrait session from which a photo may be used for an album cover, and two product photography jobs. I look forward to a positive, happy, prosperous new year. Thank you to those who read my blog(s). Wishing you all the best and may good things come your way.

Martial Arts Videos

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Karate World Champion and former member of the Canadian National Karate Team Clint Cora. Having trained in martial arts myself, I really appreciated seeing a couple of his free style forms – Bo form and Wushu style form. We had a photo session and created a couple of videos. Please check out the links to these videos:

Clint is also an author and speaker. Please check out his testimonial: http://youtu.be/io8nRMtPcpI.

In other news, I recently covered the Santa Claus Parade for the Weston Village BIA.  The weather co-operated and there were so many smiles on peoples’ faces young and old. I also completed a 2-minute promo video for an entrepreneur. I have a few projects lined up in the upcoming months – pet photography, portraits for an entrepreneur, product photography as well as a business package that include head shots, video and a family portrait session.

Recognition

In one of my previous jobs, I always dreaded performance reviews. It produced higher than normal anxieties as I had to rate myself and list my accomplishments for the year. Then onto a discussion with management about it. Every day became a big blur as my daily work life started to look the same with the demands and deadlines. I came to the realization much later in life how important it is to keep myself motivated.

After I left and moved on to other jobs, I really appreciated the little things that made every day easier. Deadlines still needed to be met and jobs needed to be done correct. However it was the team lead and manager that made the difference in one of my jobs. Whether it was quick meetings to motivate the group to do better, or the team lead corralling everyone to a competition to work faster, it was a fun environment.

My last job had a rewards system whenever an employee understood and met a set criteria. It was a form of quality control, yes, as the company knew quality products and excellent customer service may result in increased sales. I actually liked being rewarded and being told what my strengths were. It was also opportunity to improve my weaknesses.

Reviewing my skills and accomplishments for my resume/CV, I am glad to have documents to show my progress as a photographer. Upon gathering such things, I came across a blog from a business for which I provided photographs for a seminar I covered. I did remember sharing the photos with the business owners, however, I had no idea they were going to provide positive reviews. Thanks Rent Bark!
